THE Glden Age, when Athens was s wnderful, lasted frnly fifty years.

Why, d yu suppse, did it stp at all?

It stpped chiefly becausef a fight.

This time, hwever, the fight was nt between Greece and smeneutside, as in the Persian Wars. The fight was between tw cities that had befre this been mrer less friendly-mstly less-between Sparta and Athens. It was a family quarrel between Greeks. The fight was all becausenef these cities- Sparta-was jealusf thether-Athens.

The Spartans, as yu knw, were fine sldiers. The Athenians were fine sldiers, t. But ever since Themistcles had beaten the Persians at Salamis with the ships he had built, Athens had had a fine fleet as well, and Sparta had n fleet. Furthermre, Athens had becme the mst beautiful and mst cultured city in the whle wrld.

Sparta did nt care much abut Athens"s beautiful buildings and her educatin and culture and that srtf thing; that did nt interest Sparta. What did make Sparta jealus was Athen"s fleet. Sparta was inland, ntn nr near the seashre as Athens was; s Sparta culd nt have a fleet at all. That city did nt intend, hwever, t let Athens get ahead; therefre, nne excuser anther, Sparta with allf its neighbrs started a war against Athens with allf its neighbrs.

Sparta was in a partf Greece that was called by the hard name, the Pelpnnesus. In thse days, peple did nt think this a hard name, fr they were as familiar with it as yu are with such a name as Massachusetts, fr instance, which wuld seem just as hard t a Greek as Pelpnnesus des t yu. This war between Athens and Sparta was, therefre, called the Pelpnnesian War frm the fact that it was ntnly Sparta but allf the Pelpnnesus that fught against Athens.

We think a war lasts entirely t lng if it lasts furr five years, but the Pelpnnesian War lasted twenty-seven years! There is a saying, "When Greek meets Greek then cmes a tugf war!" which means t say, "When tw equal fighters such as Athens and Sparta, bth Greek, meet eachther in battle, whknws hw it will end?"I am nt ging t tell yu abut all the battles that tk place during these twenty-seven years, but at the endf this lng and bldy war, bth cities were tired and wrnut, and the glryf Athens was gne. Althugh Sparta was ahead, neither city ever amunted t much afterward. The Pelpnnesian War ruined them bth. That"s the way war des!

All during the Pelpnnesian War there was a man in Athens by the namef Scrates wh, many think, wasnef the wisest and best men wh ever lived. He was called a philspher and went abut the city teaching the peple what was right and what theyught t d. But insteadf actually telling the peple what he thught was right, he asked them questins which made them see what was right. In this way, chiefly by asking questins, he led peple t findut fr themselves what he wanted them t knw. This kindf teaching, simply by asking questins, has ever since been called Scratic.

Scrates had a snub nse and was bald and quite ugly, and yet he was very ppular with the Athenians, which may seem strange, fr the Athenians lved beautiful faces and beautiful figures and beautiful things, and Scrates was anything but beautiful. It must have been the beautyf Scrates"s character that made them frget his ugliness, as I knw sme bys and girls wh think their teacher is perfectly beautiful and just because she is s gd and kind they lve her, althugh she is really nt pretty at all.

Scrates had a wife named Xantippe. She had a bad temper and was the wrst kindf a gruch. She thught Scrates was wasting his time, that he was a lafer, as he did n wrk that brught in any mney.ne day she sclded him s ludly that he left the huse, whereupn she threw a bucketf watern him. Scrates, wh never answered back, merely remarked t himself:

"After thunder, rain may be expected."

Scrates didn"t believe in all the Greek gds, Zeus, Aphrdite, and the rest, but he was careful nt t say s himself, fr the Greeks were very particular that nne shuld sayr d anything against their gds. Phidias, yu remember, was thrwn int prisn fr merely putting his picturen the shieldf the gddess Athena, andne wuld have been put t death fr teaching yung men nt t believe in the gds.

At last, hwever, Scrates, as he had feared he wuld be, was charged with nt believing in the Greek gds and with teachingthers nt t believe in them. Fr this he was cndemned t death. He wasrdered t drink a cupf hemlck, which was a deadly pisn. Scrates"s pupils,r disciples, as they were then called, tried t have him refuse t drink the cup, but he wuld nt disbey therder; and s, when he was nearly seventy yearsld, with all his disciples136 美国学生世界历史 · A Child"s Histryf the wrldarund him, he drank the cupf hemlck and died.

Althugh Scrates lived many hundredsf years ag, he believed and taught sme things that peple tday als believe.

nef these things he believed was that eachf us has inside a cnscience, which tells us what is right and what is wrng; we dn"t have t read frm a bkr be tld by anther what is rightr what is wrng.

Anther thing he taught was that there is a life after death and that when we dieur suls liven.

N wnder he was nt afraid himself t die!
